1- About Our Department

In the Department of Horticulture, our students take theoretical courses for seven semesters and workplace practice for one semester, in accordance with the 7 + 1 system. Horticulture Department; It conducts education and research activities in the main disciplines of fruit growing and breeding, vegetable growing and breeding, vineyard cultivation and ornamental plant cultivation. Theoretical and applied training and research are carried out on the cultivation techniques, reproduction (seedling, sapling, seed), breeding, harvesting and storage techniques, plant physiology, plant biology, post-harvest physiological issues of economically grown fruit and vegetable species and varieties in the region.

 

2- Why Should It Be Preferred?

Horticulture is becoming increasingly important both in the world and in our country. Our province of Sakarya, located in the Marmara Region, has an important potential in terms of its extremely suitable Horticultural production areas. Climatic conditions and strategic geographical location make the region advantageous in terms of fruit growing, viticulture, vegetable growing and ornamental plant production. It has become a necessity to implement modern production methods in the region, to create new production areas or to improve existing production areas, and to solve the problems faced by the producers with scientific methods. To conduct scientific research in the field of Horticulture, to carry out educational activities on these issues, to increase the variety of products especially suitable for the conditions of the region we are in, to inform the growers of the region, to organize courses, seminars, congresses, to work in cooperation with the public and private sector to provide scientific and practical solutions to potential problems. it is necessary to produce. The academic knowledge, new agricultural techniques and research habits in the field of horticultural crops and the scientific studies in this field will bring the scientific studies to a universal level and will contribute to the development of our country by creating staff that will contribute to the development of our country, fruit, vegetable, vineyard and ornamental plants growing and breeding. It is necessary to train enlightened and honest engineers equipped with engineering knowledge until the consumption stage of the products, and at the same time to create academic staff that will compete with universities in the world.

 

3- Goal

The main purpose of our department is; To train Agricultural Engineers who always take our national priorities into account, who can make decisions based on data, who have gained scientific and impartial thinking, problem solving and design skills, who are dynamic and progressive, who have environmental and social awareness, who can think analytically, and who are fully equipped in the field of Horticulture and consequently Horticulture of our country. to contribute to the development of the branch of production; To conduct research on horticultural crop cultivation, breeding and post-harvest physiology in line with our national priorities and technological advances, and to ensure that these researches are presented and published on national or international platforms. In accordance with this purpose, by evaluating the potentials of students at the highest level with various courses and applications in Horticulture in Undergraduate and Postgraduate education, providing their education in the field of Horticulture, bringing and introducing new techniques and applications to the region, working in cooperation with the producer, public and private sector to solve potential problems. and producing practical solutions.

 

4- Target

Based on our national priorities, providing education and training at a visual and auditory level in the fields of horticultural crop cultivation, breeding and post-harvest physiology, conducting research based on cooperation with university-industry-private and legal organizations, and developing all these studies with international relations.

 

5- Education Opportunities

Our Faculty of Agriculture has sufficient opportunities in terms of technological infrastructure and academic staff. While our department provides education at the undergraduate level as the Department of Horticulture, it also provides education at the graduate level as the Department of Horticulture. In our Horticulture Department, 3 faculty members, two of whom are Professors and one of which is a Doctor Lecturer, and personnel responsible for the administrative affairs of the department work. All of the professors of our department have professional experience in their professions and have carried out many national and international studies.

 

6- Laboratory Facilities

The departmental laboratories are equipped with the support provided by the projects completed in the past and currently carried out in terms of equipment and chemical materials. While many basic analyzes can still be performed in our department laboratory, there are biotechnology, tissue culture, pomology and computer laboratories that are open to the common use of all departments created by our Rectorate. All analyzes needed for Horticulture can be done in these laboratories.

 

7- Course Contents

While preparing the course ECTS and contents of our department, the preparation is made by taking the course contents of the local and foreign Faculties of Agriculture into consideration. Teaching-learning methods and strategies are chosen to increase students' skills such as self-study, lifelong learning, observation, teaching to others, presenting, critical thinking, teamwork, and effective use of informatics. In addition, attention is paid to ensure that the teaching style supports students with different abilities.

14- Working Areas Of Graduate Students

In the Department of Horticulture, education and research are carried out in the fields of Fruit Growing and Breeding, Vegetable Growing and Breeding, Vineyard Growing and Breeding, Ornamental Plants Growing and Breeding, Conservation of Horticultural Products and Post-Skin Physiology, Organic Agriculture and Biotechnology. Students who successfully complete the four-year education graduate with the title of "Agricultural Engineer". Agricultural Engineers, who graduated from the Department of Horticulture, primarily affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, provincial-district directorates, research institutes, various public institutions and organizations, Agricultural Credit Cooperatives, producers unions, chambers of agriculture, municipalities, banks, greenhouses and the private sector in various fields related to agriculture. As well as working in their fields, they can also provide consultancy to many companies. In addition to these, agricultural engineers graduated from our department can create their own projects and thus work in their own businesses. Among them; There are areas such as commercial cultivation of various fruit, vegetable and ornamental plant species, viticulture, seedling and nursery, greenhouse cultivation, mushroom cultivation, seed and fertilizer dealership.

 

15- Competencies Graduate Students Will Have

Our students who have completed their undergraduate education in our department learn basic information about science and environmental sciences. Have the basic knowledge of Agricultural Sciences. By learning about Horticulture, he specializes in the cultivation of fruit, vegetables and ornamental plants. When the program is completed successfully and the program qualifications are met, a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering is obtained. Within the framework of the education our students receive; The students gain theoretical and practical knowledge and skills on improvement, cultivation, propagation, harvesting and storage techniques of garden plants that are cultivated generally in Turkey and in Sakarya region in particular. The students of the department, who contribute by closely following the studies of the department, also increase their experience in the subjects they want to specialize through laboratory studies, field applications and graduation theses.
